Shorin Ryu’s Status
Okinawan martial arts are the types of martial arts or combat techniques that which were established and instigated at the island of Okinawa. One of the most famous, as not to mention highly recommended, forms of martial arts that is considered a true blue Okinawan martial arts is Shorin Ryu. Established in the 1800’s, Shorin Ryu is a traditional form of karate that is said to be founded by Sokon Matsumura.
The following are facts about Shorin Ryu that will undoubtedly catch the attention of both Shorin Ryu practitioners and people who are thinking of mastering a form of martial arts.
? Historians cannot totally declare that Sokon Matsumura is the founder of Shorin Ryu just because there was no written evidence that tells that Sokon Matsumura solely established this particular martial art. What is known was that Matsumura was a strong warrior in his time and a brave bodyguard of not just one but three Okinawan kings. The techniques and movements of Shorin Ryu were formulated by Matsumura from his many years of travel and experience in battles. It is believed that all the systematic movements and defenses used in Shorin Ryu were the combination of Matsumura’s teachings and the refinement of his students to the movements and actions of the art.
? The translation of Shorin Ryu in plain English is Shaolin association. Some interpreters say that Shorin Ryu is actually “small forest” in English. Both translations seem correct since the Okinawan people perceived that Shorin Ryu mirrors the fundamentals and the inspiration of Chinese in this martial art.
? The style of Shorin Ryu is the combination of the oldest Chinese kung fu and Te, which is a punching martial art known in Okinawa. And since it is derived from a punching combat, the techniques used in Shorin Ryu are more hand based rather than foot works. Traditional martial art weapons are also allowed to be used during a Shorin Ryu fight. The movements in Shorin Ryu are more direct compared to other martial arts where circling the opponent is required to follow the art’s kata. But like almost all martial arts, Shorin Ryu requires a practitioner who can move swiftly and gracefully. These swift and graceful movements are important in Shorin Ryu because they help in correcting the motion and flow of the sequence in the art.
? The ranking system in Shorin Ryu is organized by the use of belts. The ranking of the practitioners is based on the skills and the progress of actions of the Shorin Ryu students. The speed and power in every movement are also contributing factors in the over-all ranking. Before a Shorin Ryu student is promoted, he/she must first perform in front of a panel of Shorin Ryu instructors or examiners. Before reaching the Dan status, the Shorin Ryu practitioner must pass both oral and written examinations. White belted Shorin Ryu students are considered newbies and the brown belted students are the first Kyus. Black belted practitioners indicate the Dan status.
