Some Interesting Facts about Sambo

- Sambo is a form of martial art that is formed and developed in the Soviet Union. It is alternatively called cambo or SAMBO which is an acronym for Samozaschita Bez Orujiya, meaning “self defense without weapons.” It was first taught to the Red Army to be able to improve their level of hand to hand combat. It was formed as a result of the attempts of two Russians named Vasili Oschepkov and Victor Spiridonov, to incorporate foreign martial arts into the local wrestling and grappling methods.
- The foreign fighting arts in question is said to be the Japanese Judo, the Chinese Shuaijiao and the Brazilian Jujitsu. In addition, it has acquired some techniques from the Greco – Roman and freestyle of wrestling as well as boxing. However, it is said that the modern Sambo is not limited from these techniques since it is created from the techniques gathered from different forms of martial arts found all over the world.
- Although originally a single entity, it is now divided into five basic styles. These include:
o Sport – is often compared to judo and amateur wrestling. It focuses on grapples, throws and groundwork to be able to force the opponent into submission.
o Self – defense – it makes use of various techniques that are used to defend oneself against any type of opponent which are either armed or unarmed.
o Combat – this particular style is focused on both offense and defense. Aside from unarmed techniques, it also makes use of various weapons for different hand to hand combat situations.
o Special – this more specific version of the combat type is made most especially for the special units of the army. It enables for a rapid response in different situations.
o Freestyle – of the five types, this is the one that is not developed in the Soviet Union. It makes use of a different set of rules which is made by the American Sambo Association or ASA.
- The practitioner of the martial art has a unique set of uniform that is used on both practices and tournaments. The upper body is covered with the kurtka which is a jacket that comes in blue and red colors while the shorts with the same color are worn on the lower body. Unlike other forms of fighting discipline, it doesn’t make use of a belt to distinguish one’s rank. Instead, practitioners use a rating system to determine their level of skill. This starts from the lowest level of third – class sportsman to the highest which is distinguished master of sports.
- Sambo has its own level of popularity because of its use in many forms of popular culture. It has been used by many forms of fictional characters in television as well as video games. This includes Blue Mary of the King of Fighters; Zangief in Street fighter; Leon and Bayman in Dead or Alive; and Cyrax and Sektor in Mortal Kombat. In addition, it has been associated with many famous MMA practitioners especially those who are participating in the UFC. However, its most famous practitioner would be the prime minister of the Soviet Union himself, Vladimir Putin, who is said to be a master of sports not only in Sambo but also in Judo.
