Pa Kua Chang
Pa kua Chang – Learning the basics
The Chinese has always possessed a rich culture when it comes to martial arts. This is the reason why many movies that feature Chinese actors often depict them as high flying kung fu experts. Of course, most of these movies are exaggerated but the fact that they are knowledgeable in martial arts is not. They possess a variety of different disciplines that are unique in different ways. One of these is the martial art that is known as Pa kua Chang or the Eight Diagram Palm.
Pa kua Chang is well – known for the circular movement that it incorporates in its movement. This is characterized by the various feet and body postures that a practitioner does when practicing or faced with an opponent. At first glance, this may seem like a normal way of fighting which is used to encircle and find an opening in the opponent’s defense. However, this martial art is based more solely on defense and counter attacks. The circular movement is used to evade, parry, lessen or adjust an opponent’s attack. It then provides room for a very powerful counter to the opponent’s vital points.
The Pa kua Chang master would continuously move around the opponent even though he is not under attack. This makes them a difficult target to attack and defend from. An opponent’s attack would prove useless since its power will only be dissolved and dissipated. Different kinds of counterattacks would be utilized like a palm or elbow strike. In many instances, the opponent would also be forced to shift their positions randomly which causes them to be unbalanced and open to the attacks. This continues until the opponent is defeated or overrun.
This martial art is not only a good form of self defense but also a good way of maintaining and improving one’s health. This is because it uses a variety of techniques that has been proven to be beneficial to one’s mind and body. This is because of the training involve in Chi Kung (Qi Gong), meditation and breathing. This allows the Pa kua Chang master to control all his body processes and to increase his focus and concentration. He will be able to know more about his body and use that knowledge in any situation.
These techniques are based on one main principle that is followed by almost all kinds of Chinese martial arts. This is called the “trinity principle.” This is based on the belief that the trinity concept is the foundation of all strengths and power in Pa Kua Chang. The most major trinity that is used in the said martial art is the one that incorporates the Yin and Yang principle, which connotes balance and harmony; the five element principle, which depicts the component of all things; and the change principle, which means that everything is continuously changing and evolving. Each of these principles is depicted in the way the martial art is done and executed from its flowing circular movement, to its methods of attack and counter attack.
