Krav Maga
The Practice of Krav Maga
Krav Maga, literally translated, means ‘combat’ for Krav, and ‘contact’ for Maga. It is a system that was developed in the country of Israel, and was meant for the practice of combat. The practice of this combat system has espoused an assumption that there will be ‘no quarter’ given, which means that once Krav Maga is exercised, the opponent must be neutralized in order that the defendant might be able to flee safely from a life- threatening situation. As Krav Maga is a combat system, this is normally utilized when a grave threat has been identified.
As earlier mentioned, this combat system has been created bearing in mind that no weapon is available to be used by the defender, thus the focus in Krav Maga is physical contact.
Compared to other martial arts, Krav Maga does not provide for any differences in practice for men and women. It is also not a recognized sport, thus there is no standard leveling system, competitions, even uniforms. There are some Krav Maga practicing organizations though, that are able to provide recognition of individual progress through the provision of badges that identify rank and skill set. In this combat system, the emphasis in the attack or defense is the immediate neutralization of threats or danger that has a high probability of being deadly and dangerous. Attacks and defenses learned through Krav Maga may be disabling, since the movements will target body parts that may be easily and more effectively harmed, such as the groin area, the eyes and the head. The attacks may also be designed for the attacker or the defender to make use of any material that may be available within his immediate area or immediate vicinity. Apart from ensuring that the threat is neutralized, the practice of Krav Maga also ensures that while engaged in a fight, safety is still a priority.
Those who teach Krav Maga are able to customize techniques so that practitioners will be able to make use of available materials found in their immediate surroundings, so that all circumstances can and may be prepared for. What the instructors also teach Krav Maga students is how to apply the techniques to the threats by only causing the least amount of damage possible, while also ensuring the safety and neutralization of the current threat being experienced.
While there are no standard rules in the application of Krav Maga, there are some form of guidelines that practitioners are advised to apply when practicing the combat system. It is to avoid being hurt as much as possible, to swiftly disable or neutralize the attacking party, to start with techniques for defense and then rapidly switch to techniques of attack, to use one’s own physical reflexes, to use areas of the body that may be easily attacked or damaged and lastly, to be able to make use of any available items within the situation’s vicinity as tools to defend and attack the object that is posing as an immediate threat.
