Dim Mak or more commonly referred to as death touch in the world of martial arts is believed to be the ability to cause illness, delayed death, and instant death when certain parts of the body are struck. This has been the wide belief that ancient kung fu had the knowledge of utilizing the technique of targeting these points to inflict harm and immediately defeating the opponent. The idea of the dim mak was believed to have been the same man who started the practice of the tai chi postulating that in the body, lie points which when attacked can cause rapid death on the opponent. These points in the body are believed to be the same chi points pricked with needles to cure diseases based on the theory of acupuncture healing.
Throughout history from the ancient times when martial arts flourished, the idea of the dim mak became a very vital concept spawning many different techniques that were taught to have been passed on to just the most advanced and most trusted kung fu students. It has been clouded with so much mystery and skepticism if it really exists and if it really does cause fatal injury. It was thought that proper understanding of the vital pressure points of the body and understanding how the flow of chi within the body can enhance training and mastery of kung fu techniques and applying it to immobilize an opponent with just a single touch that will not require even the hardest of pressures. There have been confessions of experimenting with this concept and many a great deal have been said to have experienced its dangerous and near fatal or fatal consequences.
The theory of the dim mak is even more immortalized and glorified in such martial arts movies such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Kiss of the Dragon. For some researchers and experts in traditional oriental and Chinese healing and medicine, this actually can be traced back to as far back as 200 B.C during the development and peak of Chinese Internal Medicine when it was thought that the body has pressure points on which when pressed with the right amount of pressure can release energy and could either inflict pain or healing.
Modern Science on the other hand in some studies has found a great deal on the possible evidence of the lethal effects of the death touch on the nervous and cardiovascular systems which could explain why the pressure of the death touch can either immobilize or paralyze, slow down death or give you sudden death because the pressure points are associated with points where vital arteries and nerves are located which when inflicted with injurious death could shut down the entire human systems almost instantaneously.
On the other hand, proper understanding of dim mak has been thought to be the valuable factor in wellness and healing techniques by using these pressure points instead to release healing energy. It is now more popularly used in therapeutic processes such as massage, reflexology, and reiki, sometimes even used for faster recuperation of patients either from surgical operations or those suffering from debilitating illnesses.
